Garmish-Partenkirchen, Day 1

Today we packed up from Bertchesgaden and drove to Garmish-Partenkirchen. Again, it was cold and rainy (around 52 degrees), so we put on our rain coats. Our first stop was to our hotel, and then we went to see the ski jump. This ski jump was build in the 1920s and hosted the Olympics in 1936. It was an interesting shape with the top seeming to hang in the middle of the air. We walked a little down the pathway toward the Partnach Gorge (we didn’t walk the gorge though) and then came back to our car.

We had planned on doing the sommerrodelbahn, or summer toboggan run, that is next to the ski jump but it was closed because of the rain. Although this was one of my big things to do in G-P, we never did end up doing it because it was wet every day we were here and the toboggan run closes when wet. When we got back to our car we realized that we parked in a spot that wasn’t a spot and got a ticket for 10 euro. Long story short, we tried several times over the next few days to pay this ticket and still haven’t figured out how to pay it! They sure don’t make it easy, and we just want to give someone the 10 euro to take care of the ticket!

Anyway, because we couldn’t do the toboggan run, we just walked around the old town area a bit. I was a little disappointed but we had a nice walk around the town even though almost all the stores were closed because it was Sunday. The houses were colorful and painted with different scenes or adornments, and I couldn’t narrow down the great pictures of the different buildings.

We found a pretzel store (well, we actually found several; they are on every corner like gelato stores in Italy) that had a pretzel handle for the door. Even though the store was closed and we couldn’t go in, Ronin just had to get a picture of himself taking a bite out of the pretzel! Don’t worry, not pretzels (or children) were harmed in the making of this photo.

This was a pretty light day, but tomorrow we will be getting up really early to go explore some more. So even though we didn’t do too much today we will be ready for tomorrow!
