Christmas Market Fun
We wanted to visit the Christmas market by the Szent István Bazilika during a warm day so we could actually eat some of the street food sold there. It took quite a while to find a day that wasn’t cloudy and freezing, but finally the blue skies opened for us. The market is right in front of the Bazilika, which makes for a beautiful backdrop. The items for sale can usually be found in the Great Market Hall anyway, but for some reason seem more special out in the open air market. I particularly like all the marzipan balls, but I know the kids wouldn’t eat them!
Last time we were at the market they didn’t have this heart picture frame, so of course everyone needed a picture inside the frame. I just wish the blog didn’t squish all the pictures that are supposed to be vertical! But I like the unique poses each kid came up with by themselves.
Finally we got to get our food! We first stopped by one of the stalls where a woman gave the kids gingerbread cookies. I guess it was for charity, so I put 1,000 forint bill in the bucket. I guess that is more than is usually given, because she gave the kids each another cookie. We walked around the food stalls inspecting our options. We decided on a soup in a bread bowl and a potato hash brown pancake thing for me, a big sausage and potato cake for Zoey, a rotisserie chicken for Willow, a breaded chicken, bread, and potato cake for Ronin, and a stew in a bread bowl and potato cake for JonPaul. All together, street food is expensive! It was over $60 for our food, which is more than we have paid for almost any meal here in Budapest so far. Ronin and JonPaul’s potato cakes were good, but mine and Zoey’s were burnt and too crispy. JonPaul’s stew was better than my soup, but I was glad we got to try the food! And Willow really loved her chicken. She gnawed it clear to the bone.
